The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is the Mark Manson book in our library. Strip away the tone and the argument is disciplined: you have a finite amount of care, so the skill is choosing what deserves it, and most of the things that feel urgent do not.

The second half of the argument is the more useful one. If problems are not obstacles to a good life but the substance of it, then the question stops being how do I get rid of this and becomes which problems do I want. That is a harder question and a better one.

How to read it. Read it as the counterweight to the rest of this shelf rather than as a method. It is the book that argues against the framing the other four use.

It sits in the Motivation and Inspiration bundle as the book the others on this shelf are implicitly answering. Read it against them rather than alongside them.

The book

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

Mark Manson

Attention and care treated as scarce, which is the part the tone obscures. The useful move is the reframe that problems are not obstacles to a good life but the substance of it, so the question becomes which problems you want rather than how to remove them.

What it argues
  • You have a limited amount of care, so choosing where it goes is the actual skill.
  • Problems do not stop; the useful question is which problems you are willing to have.
  • Values determine outcomes, so choose them deliberately rather than by default.
  • You are not special, and accepting that removes a large source of anxiety.
  • Action produces motivation more reliably than motivation produces action.
  • Saying no to most things is what makes the yes mean anything.

Suited to someone who has read a lot of positive-thinking books and found them thin, and to anyone tired of being told to want things more. Less useful if what you need is a method rather than a reframe.

Where to start

Read the chapter about values before the ones about not caring. The book is often read as permission to stop trying, and that reading misses the argument, which is that care is finite and therefore has to be allocated rather than expanded. If you take only one idea from it, take that one, and then ask what you are currently spending attention on that does not deserve it.

Where this fits

This is the counterweight on the shelf. The Power of Positive Thinking and The Power of Your Subconscious Mind argue that expectation shapes outcomes; this one argues that what you expect is less important than what you are willing to accept. Read them against each other rather than as a set, because the disagreement is where the useful thinking happens.
